For foreign tourists, there’s nothing better than traveling to Rio with the current exchange rate for the dollar and the euro, which allows them to opt for five-star accommodations while spending almost nothing in their own currency.I’ve been living in Rio de Janeiro since 2014 and have had the opportunity to visit many hotels here. Here are my best advice about Rio’s hotels.
The worst hotel in Rio de Janeiro
The Pestana Hotel, although part of a famous chain, is one I wouldn’t recommend to my worst enemy. The rooms, beds, towels, and sheets are old, the service is terrible, the breakfast is weak, and it’s located in the most tourist-trappy area of Rio. Avoid it!
Best budget hotel in Rio de Janeiro
If you want a good, new, and cheap hotel in Rio de Janeiro, I recommend the Atlântico Travel Hotel, located on Barata Ribeiro Street in Copacabana. Besides being very affordable, this hotel even has a pool. I know many people who come to Rio for work, stay there, and praise the facilities and cleanliness.
Best hotel for couples in Rio de Janeiro
If your goal is romance, a honeymoon, or a trip for two, the best hotel in Rio for that is the Fairmont, located at Posto 6, in front of the Copacabana Fort. The highlight of the hotel is the impeccable American-style service. The restaurant features a large Josper grill that produces impeccable grilled dishes and memorable plates. On the ground floor, several bars, restaurants, and one of the best pizzerias in Rio de Janeiro await you.
Four-Star Hotel in Rio de Janeiro
The Miramar by Windsor in Copacabana is a great hotel, with high-quality rooms and beds, a rooftop with a spectacular view, and a restaurant that surprises. Although it presents itself as five-star, it doesn’t deserve that rating. At best, it’s a four-star, and barely that.
Best Five-Star Hotel in Rio de Janeiro
If you’re the trendy type, the best five-star hotel in Rio is the Emiliano, on Avenida Atlântica. If you’re more traditional, the best five-star hotel in Rio is undoubtedly the Copacabana Palace. Now, if you want to see and be seen, your hotel is the Fasano, at Arpoador.
Best hotel in Rio for Families
The Sheraton Rio is the best hotel option for families traveling with children in Rio de Janeiro. The hotel has a series of amenities and a kids’ place that gives peace of mind to any happy parent, in addition to having a private beach and large pools with lifeguards. Although it is located in front of a large favela, the hotel is safe, and many locals work there.
Recently renovated Hotel in Rio de Janeiro
The Porto Bay Hotel in Copacabana has just been completely renovated. Therefore, it is a great lodging option in Rio, and it has a rooftop with a spectacular view of Copacabana beach.
Trendy Hotel in Rio
The hype crowd speaks well of the Janeiro Hotel in Leblon—but I haven’t stayed there or been to its restaurant. For those who insist on staying in Leblon, which doesn’t have many great hotel options, it’s the smartest choice since the others are old and dated.
Is Barra da Tijuca a good idea?
I don’t recommend staying in Barra da Tijuca and its surroundings, especially if this is your first time coming to Rio. Barra is very far away, and you’ll have to face terrible traffic both to go and return. Besides, in Barra da Tijuca, you’ll need a taxi or Uber for any travel. It’s much smarter to stay in the South Zone of Rio. However, if your trip is more relaxed and you don’t plan to visit tourist spots, then yes, a hotel in Barra da Tijuca could be a great option in Rio. The prices are much more affordable than in the South Zone.

Staying here puts you close to the best of Rio’s nightlife and culture, and you’ll have easy access to the picturesque Ipanema and Leblon beaches, perfect for watching stunning sunsets.

Why stay here? Leblon is an upscale neighborhood that offers a more relaxed and luxurious experience. It’s adjacent to Ipanema and provides a quieter, more residential atmosphere. Why stay here? Botafogo is a central neighborhood that offers a mix of residential and commercial areas. The area is popular with both locals and tourists and is a great option for those who want to explore the city beyond the beach, with plenty of shopping centers, cafes, and restaurants.
